Opened in 1964, CapitalCare Norwood is the founding centre of
CapitalCare (known then as Hospital District # 24). Once a
traditional long term care centre, Norwood has become a pivotal
campus of care in Edmonton and area because of its unique programs,
each staffed with compassionate and knowledgeable caregivers
dedicated to meeting the special needs of over 1,000 Albertans who
live at the centre on a short term or long term basis.
Norwood is located in central Edmonton, across from the Royal
Alexandra Hospital and beside the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.
The centre has 205
long term care spaces, and specializes in six
Injury Unit (North Horizons)
Ventilator Unit (Red Eagle Ridge)
Restorative Care Unit
The oldest of Norwood's two buildings, the North pavilion, is
approaching the end of its life-cycle. CapitalCare is collaborating
with Alberta Health Services to replace it with a new building that
would continue to provide the services and programs already offered,
while adding a teaching and research component that would make
Edmonton a centre of excellence in continuing care. Importantly, a
new building at Norwood could assist in relieving some of the
current pressure on the acute care system.
In November 2014, on the occasion of Norwood's 50th anniversary, the
Alberta ministers of health and seniors toured the Norwood campus
with the administrator.
