CapitalCare Grandview art instructor honoured with award

Jo-Ann Rasmussen, art instructor at CapitalCare Grandview, was honoured June 8 with a Minister’s Seniors Service Award for teaching art to residents with dementia and other chronic disabling conditions. The awards are given each year to individual Albertans and organizations for their service and support to seniors in our province.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be awarded the Service to Seniors award,” says Jo-Ann. “It’s wonderful to have that recognition, but for me the real thrill is the residents and the positivity that comes from them.”

Jo-Ann started teaching weekly art classes at Grandview twelve years ago. It started with six residents but has increased to 16. With the help of CapitalCare staff and volunteers, Jo-Ann helps residents use different tools to create beautiful works of art. She says art classes improve residents’ self-esteem, increase confidence in their abilities and are lots of fun.
Every June, during Seniors’ Week, Jo-Ann organizes an art show to feature the work of the Grandview residents. This was Jo-Ann’s last year teaching at Grandview. As part of her final art show, held June 7 at the long-term care centre, Jo-Ann presented each of the residents’ work and recognized their accomplishments over the years.
