Work/Life balance - Is it a myth?

Dr. Ohlhauser, well known physician, speaker, pilot and author of the “The Healthy CEO," engages participants to assess their physical wellness and health knowledge from the 35,000 ft level.  As a pilot, Dr. Ohlhauser reminds us that during times of turbulence we need to place the oxygen masks over our own mouth first before helping others around us.  He uses fun motivational tools to help you reveal your own personal areas for improvement.

Dr. Ohlhauser blends humour, insight, and expert knowledge to invigorate, enlighten and challenge participants to make a difference in their own lives.

After operating a successful medical practice in Alberta, Dr. Ohlhauser developed his expertise with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta for 20 years, the last 12 years of which he acted as Registrar and CEO of the College.  Today, Dr. Ohlhauser is the President and CEO of Ohlhauser & Associates, a consulting firm specializing in healthcare strategy and management consulting for large multinationals, corporations, and government institutions.

His awards are noteworthy. He has recently received the Alberta Centennial Medal in recognition of outstanding service to the people and province of Alberta and the Dr. Louis Levasseur Distinguished Service Award from the Medical Council of Canada for outstanding contributions toward the Council's vision and mission. Dr. Ohlhauser has recently been named "one of the Top 100 Physicians of the Century" by the College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Alberta Medical Association.

What to Do When Caring Hurts: A Brief Guide for Dementia Care

This session examines why Alzheimer's disease and stroke sometime impact behaviour in a negative way. Sometimes caring hurts. How can family and other caregivers cope? When caring hurts the most important thing caregivers can do is to take care of themselves, or they risk losing the ability to cope - quickly followed by the inability to care for the person who is ill.

Understanding why the behaviour occurs sometimes helps the caregiver not to take it personally. Learn some practical ways to manage hurtful behaviour.

Peter Wiebe resides in Winkler, Manitoba where most of his career has been in geriatric care. Right out of high school he worked as a nurses aide. At that time the difficult questions about life, death and spirituality led him to earn a Bachelor of Religious Education (BRE) degree at Providence College. Later he studied nursing at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. In 1988 in Winkler he developed and stayed on to manage a treatment unit (Salem Psychogeriatric Treatment Unit) for elderly patients whose behaviour was too difficult to manage in regular health care settings. A primary goal of that unit was to find non-pharmacological approaches to treat these behaviours. At positive results came from that unit he received requests to teach at many organizations across Canada.

Peter continues to teach through his business, Geriatric Education and Consultation Services. In order to stay grounded he picks up casual and term positions with health care organizations in southern Manitoba. He has co-authored several journal articles and a chapter of the book Shelter and Care of Persons with Dementia.

End of Life, Not End of Care

The culture and society of our present way of life has removed us from daily confrontation with end of life care issues.  Medical, societal and personal attitudes to end of life care are shaped by our personal life histories.  Understanding this background is the beginning of understanding the common pathway we all share to requiring care at the end of life.

Dr. Fainsinger graduated from the University of Cape Town in South Africa in 1981. In 1991, he completed the first fellowship in palliative medicine at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.  He continues to reside in Edmonton where he was Director of the Palliative Care Program at the Royal Alexandra Hospital from October 1994 – April 2006. He is the Director of the Tertiary Palliative Care Unit at the Grey Nuns Hospital, Director of the Division of Palliative Care Medicine in the Dept of Oncology, and Clinical Director for the Regional Palliative Care Program. He is a Professor in the Division of Palliative Care Medicine, Department of Oncology at the University of Alberta. He is active in education and research, and has published articles on a number of palliative care topics, with an interest in dehydration, delirium, sedation at the end of life, and a classification system for cancer pain.  He has over 140 publications in journals and book chapters.
