Behavioural Assessment and Stabilization Unit

CapitalCare Lynnwood
8740 - 165 Street
Edmonton, Alberta T5R 2R8

CapitalCare has been operating the 25 bed Behavioural Assessment and Stabilization Unit since 1988. This secure unit is located on the third floor of the Parker Pavilion at Lynnwood.

This unique unit was developed to provide short term comprehensive assessments of residents referred to continuing care with behaviours that are unable to be managed on existing units in the system. The majority of clients have a dementia diagnosis and sometimes an accompanying psychiatric diagnosis.

Care Team
The care team meets regularly to identify and address the needs of all program residents through team meetings and ongoing interdisciplinary consultation.

Special Features

  • This unit has 15 flow-through beds and 10 longer-term beds.
  • One of the flow-through beds is designated a holding bed and is reserved for short-term and urgent admissions by the Long Term Care Psychiatric Consulting Service. These admissions are often precipitated by an acute episode of psychiatric behaviour due to a medical or social crisis in the client's life.

Services
Residents receive the following services:

  • Investigation of behaviours
  • Behaviour management
  • Medication adjustment
  • Structured activity programs for individuals and groups
  • Supportive counseling and education
  • Discharge planning and follow-up

Eligibility
The Behavioural Assessment and Stabilization Unit is designed for clients who:

  • Have a diagnosis indicating a dementia or cognitive impairment
  • Present with disruptive behaviours that have not responded to management in the person's existing environment
  • May have psychiatric symptoms which are exacerbated by the underlying progressive dementia
  • Are over the age of 65 years; consideration for admission may be given to those who are younger and have a diagnosis of dementia.
  • Special consideration may be given to individuals with moderately advanced stage dementia whose caregivers require short term respite.
