CapitalCare Foundation Research Grant
Alzheimer Care
Research Grant
CapitalCare Foundation Research Grant
Maximum value: $20,000 LOI
Deadline: October 3, 2008
This grant fund was established through donations received by the
CapitalCare Foundation for the purpose of supporting research within
CapitalCare’s continuing care centres. CapitalCare has an
established reputation in the research field. It has one of the
premier continuing care research units in the country, sponsors
applied research through this Foundation Research Grant, and has an
annual grant for research focused on
Alzheimer care.
In the last 10 years CapitalCare has hosted more than 100 research
projects conducted by university-based researchers.
Projects seeking funding through this grant must be focused
primarily on residents, staff, or programs operating in one or more
of CapitalCare’s centres. Researchers, including new investigators,
staff involved in care, and graduate students from all disciplines
and institutions may apply.
In the 2008-09 grant competition, projects must address one of the
following two topics:
a)
Participation in meaningful activities is known to increase the
quality of life for residents in continuing care centres; however,
research suggests that the majority of elderly nursing home
residents spend about two-thirds of their day in passive activities
and most activities are undertaken while seated. How can
CapitalCare (while remaining within its budget):
i) increase the activity
level of residents,
ii) improve the range of
activities available for elderly residents, and
iii) find ways (such as
assistive technology) to “leave no one behind”, that is meet the
unique needs of the resident?
b) The
Resident Assessment Instrument 2.0 (i.e., RAI or Minimum Data
Set) is still relatively new to Alberta continuing care sector but
is well known in other parts of the world. How can CapitalCare’s
RAI 2.0 data be used to:
i) support the
organization’s desire to make changes, such as outlined in topic “a”
above, or
ii) better predict and
prevent critical incidents for residents, or
iii) promote optimal
individualized care planning?
