Volunteer Opportunities

We invite you to become a volunteer at one of the CapitalCare centres. Help make our residents smile - make their day!

Below is a listing of volunteer positions available. Click on each position title for more details.

All positions require:

  • a clear Police Information Check through the Volunteer Services offices, in accordance with the Protection for Persons in Care Act
  • completion of a TB screening questionnaire
  • an interest in serving people
  • the willingness to promote a sense of well-being and contribute to the morale of residents and clients.

To apply for a volunteer position, please download and complete or print the application form. Drop off your completed form at the centre where you would like to volunteer, or fax or mail it to the centre.

Auxiliary
Member
Summary: Join our Auxiliary and help with their many fundraising endeavours. Make new friends at the monthly Auxiliary meetings. You can also work a shift or two in the Tuck Shop. This is a fun position with lots of teamwork!

Responsibilities: Attend monthly Auxiliary meetings; work in the Tuck Shop; participate in the annual bazaar, monthly teas, and other projects of the Auxiliary; exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, be mature and motivated.

Beauty Salon
Helper
Summary: Porter residents to and from the centre's beauty salon for their appointments. Remove rollers, assist with styling.

Responsibilities: Porter residents to and from the centre's beauty salon for their scheduled appointments; under the supervision of the stylist remove rollers, place residents under the hairdryers; visit with the residents while they are waiting for their appointment and having their hair styled; provide positive reinforcement to the resident; exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, possess good communication skills, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the beauty salon hair stylist. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One shift per week.

Bingo Helper
Lynnwood and
Grandview
Summary: Encourage residents to socialize and enjoy playing the game of bingo.

Responsibilities: Assist Recreation staff with setting up the program, assist in portering residents to and from the program, assist in motivating residents during the program, assist Recreation staff with clean-up at the end of the program, exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, possess good communication skills, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the Recreation Therapist or other designated staff. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: 2 shifts per week

Days and times: Tuesday 6:15 - 8:15pm and Friday 1:30 - 3:30pm

CHOICE Helper
Norwood and
Dickinsfield
Summary: Work with elderly participants of the CHOICE day program. Assist with recreation programs, meals and rehabilitative activities. Lots of variety in a busy environment.

Responsibilities: Report to and meet briefly with the Lead Home Support Worker for special instructions; assist staff with setting up program area, assembling supplies, etc. to prepare for the program; greet participants at CHOICE entrance, assist with removing outdoor apparel, provide name tags and help with distributing beverages; assist in portering participants to and from recreation activities in designated areas; assist in fostering positive, ongoing interaction between participants and yourself so participants will be encouraged to exercise choice and self expression through creative and motivational recreation activities; assist in maintaining a safe, clean and tidy work areas, assist in set up, distribution and clean up of lunch; assist at home time with outdoor apparel, removal of participants' name tags and ensuring safety belts are done up on wheelchairs; perform other duties and projects as mutually agreed upon; exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Day Program
Volunteer

Dickinsfield,

Summary: Assist disabled and elderly participants of our day program. Help with the recreation programs, meals and daily tasks. Great opportunity to make a real difference in someone's life! Fun activities every day!

Responsibilities: Assist in program planning and preparation; assist in the supervision of programs; assist in communication flow regarding client's participation within the program; assist with portering; assist with various out trips into the community; assist in greeting, removing outdoor apparel, providing name tags and beverages; assist in "home time" preparations; assist in positive interactions and socialization with clients; perform other related duties as mutually agreed upon; exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision; be dependable and committed; be friendly and trustworthy; possess good verbal skills and a practical approach to problem solving; enjoy activities such as baking, dancing, exercise, mental aerobics, card games, individual projects, crafts; be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the Day Program Support staff. Volunteer may wish to attend the Long Spoonfuls Mealtime Companion Training Program. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: 1 shift per week

Gardening
Assistant

Strathcona only
Summary: To keep the plants in the centre healthy.

Responsibilities:
Water the plants in the assigned areas, inform Greenhouse Keeper of plants needing pruning or other attention, exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, able to communicate effectively with residents and staff, have a practical approach to problem solving, knowledge of greenhouse and gardening procedures would be helpful, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific assignment or training will be provided by the Greenhouse Keeper. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One shift per week.

Generation Mix Summary: Teach your little one about the spirit of giving. Visit our residents with your child - share interests and experiences. This opportunity allows you to really get to know a senior and bring happiness through the love of children.

Responsibilities: Establish rapport with residents, help resident and child interact, engage in conversation with resident, supervise child at all times, exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, able to communicate effectively with residents and staff, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the Recreation Therapist. Other training and in-services will be available.

Laundry Helper Summary: Help a disabled resident with their personal laundry. Wash, dry and fold laundry while visiting with the resident. Equipment provided.

Responsibilities: Meet with assigned resident(s) at pre-arranged time; assist resident with doing his/her personal laundry using the machines located on the unit; arrange date and time of next visit; provide resident with social interaction and stimulation; report regularly to the Coordinator of Volunteer Services and/or Care Manager; exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, have strong interpersonal skills, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One shift per week.

Mealtime
Companion
Summary: Assist residents at mealtime. Training is provided. This is a great position for busy people since you only need to give one hour per week.

Responsibilities: Welcome residents to the dining room; assist with portering; wash resident's face and hands before meals; assist with setting out plates, coffee, juice, tea or other food items; assist residents in dining area with opening packages, cutting food, buttering bread, etc.; feed low risk residents in dining area; socialize with residents during meals, provide verbal encouragement; accompany residents back to rooms; wash resident's face and hands as necessary after meal; promote a sense of well-being; accompany resident under your responsibility at all times; exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, able to communicate effectively with residents and staff, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Complete the Loving Spoonfuls Mealtime Companion Training Program.

Minimum commitment: One shift per week.

Days and times: Monday - Sunday; breakfast 8am, lunch 12pm, dinner 4:30pm

Music Volunteer Summary: This is a win/win volunteer job! Come to a centre for one hour per week to play a musical instrument, lead a group in a sing-along or start a choir. Share your love for music. What a wonderful opportunity to bring the gift of music to our residents.

Responsibilities: Meet with Recreation staff to discuss the particulars of the assignment, play selected music to residents, communicate with the Recreation Therapist regarding program and resident concerns or suggestions, care for music equipment and supplies, exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, able to play a musical instrument, knowledge of older music is an asset, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the Recreation Therapist or designated staff. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One shift per week.

Pet Therapy
Volunteer
Summary: Provide companionship and enhance the quality of life of our residents through the love of animals. Bring your pet to a centre on a regular basis and interact with residents.

Responsibilities: Provide pet visits to individuals or groups of residents, as assigned by the Recreation Therapist; keep animal on leash at all times while in the centre; establish rapport with residents; provide tactile stimulation by encouraging residents to touch the pet; inform Recreation Therapist or Coordinator of Volunteer Services immediately if the animal scratches or bites a resident, or if a resident mistreats the animal; exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times. The volunteer is responsible for cleaning up after the pet and for the behaviour of the pet.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, understand and practice resident confidentiality, have good judgment and insight, provide proof of pet's up to date vaccination, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the Recreation Therapist. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One shift per week.

Physiotherapy
Volunteer
Summary: Great experience for anyone interested in physiotherapy as a career

Responsibilities: Assist in portering residents to and from the department for appointments, wiping or cleaning equipment and changing linen, assist with individual and group activities, exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, knowledge or interest in physiotherapy, able to communicate effectively with residents and staff, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the Physiotherapy staff. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One two-hour shift per week

Days and times: Monday - Friday, 10am - 2pm

Pub Crew
Lynnwood only
Summary: Encourage residents to socialize and enjoy activities at Pub Night.

Responsibilities: Socialize with residents, porter residents to and from event, assist with serving food and beverages as directed by staff, collect payment for drinks served to residents, assist with preparation and clean-up, exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, able to communicate effectively with residents and staff, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the Recreation Therapist. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One two-hour shift per week

Days and times: Friday evenings, 6:15 - 8:15pm

Helper
Summary: Have loads of fun participating in recreation programs with residents! Music, movies, crafts, floor hockey, bingo and much more.

Responsibilities: Assist Recreation staff with setting up the recreation program, assist in portering residents to and from the program, assist in motivating and encouraging residents during the program, assist Recreation staff in clean-up at the end of the program, exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, able to communicate effectively with residents and staff, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the Recreation Therapy staff. Other training and in-services will be available.

Visitor

Summary: Deliver refreshments to the long term care elders' rooms and visit with the elders. This task can be done in groups of 2 or 3 volunteers.

Responsibilities: Stock refreshment cart, deliver refreshments to elders/residents in their rooms, pick up dishes to be returned to kitchen, visit with the elders/residents, exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Enjoy visiting with seniors, interest in serving people, understand and practice resident confidentiality, able to communicate effectively with residents and staff, have a practical approach to problem solving, must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training in elder visiting and refreshment cart procedures will be provided. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One morning per week.

Resident
Assistant
Summary: Help with meals, portering residents around the centre, reading to residents, taking residents for a walk, playing cards or games, helping with residents' personal laundry, writing letters and doing other activities with residents.

Responsibilities: Assist staff with making residents' beds, setting up and clearing dining room after meals or special teas, distributing the morning and afternoon nourishment; run errands for the nursing unit; help porter residents to in-centre appointments such as recreation and physical therapy; exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Other responsibilities as appropriate or required include taking residents for inside or outside walks; read to residents; write letters; play card or board games with residents; help clean closets, bedside tables with staff and resident's permission; spend time with residents to socialize and provide individual attention; answer phones, take messages; play piano.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, able to communicate effectively with residents and staff, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the Care Manager. Volunteer may wish to attend the Long Spoonfuls Mealtime Companion Training Program. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One shift per week.

Days and times: Monday - Sunday, flexible times (8am-9pm).

Companion
Summary: Provide a resident with companionship. Chat, read, share interests, write letters, play cards or games. A great chance to practice a language.

Responsibilities: Establish rapport with the resident; provide the opportunity for the resident to converse in their first language; do activities with the resident including writing letters, reading, playing cards, walking; exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, understand and practice resident confidentiality, able to converse effectively with one or residents in their first language, able to communicate effectively with staff, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the requesting department. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One shift per week.

Days and times: Monday - Sunday, times are flexible.

Shop Attendant
Strathcona only
Summary: To staff the on-site tuck shop (Cravings) once or twice a week. Duties include selling confectionary items to elders, residents, staff, families and volunteers, keeping tack of float and items sold.

Responsibilities: Open and close shop; keep track of sales, inventory and items needing restocking; restock shelves as needed; reconcile cash at end of shift; exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Comfortable handling small amounts of money, must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, understand and practice resident confidentiality, have good communication skills and a practical approach to problem solving.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training, including tuck shop operations, cash box management and inventory tracking will be provided.  Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One afternoon shift per week.

Spiritual Care
Porter
Summary: Assist residents in getting to and from Centre services and the Service of Remembrance.

Responsibilities: Assist residents to the chapel or auditorium for services, attend to resident's needs during services, assist residents back to their units, report any spiritual concerns regarding residents to the Spiritual Care Office, exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, able to communicate effectively with residents and staff, having an interest in religious services is an asset, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the Spiritual Care Coordinator. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One shift per week.

Visitor
Summary: Provide friendly individual support to residents, such as writing letters, reading, playing cards, walking with residents, talking and reminiscing.

Responsibilities: Establish rapport with residents; provide friendly visits with residents, offer to perform such tasks as writing letters, reading, playing cards, walking, reading scriptures; report any spiritual concerns regarding resident/family to Spiritual Care Coordinator; exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, be respectful of all faiths, able to communicate effectively with residents and staff, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the Spiritual Care Coordinator. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One shift per week.

Days and times: Monday - Sunday, flexible times

Unit Assistant Responsibilities: Assist unit clerk with clerical duties such as answering the telephone, taking and relaying messages, filing, photocopying, faxing and running errands, answering resident and visitor questions when appropriate, exhibit CapitalCare's Customer Service standards at all times.

Competencies:  Must be willing to accept direction and supervision, be dependable and committed, be friendly and trustworthy, understand and practice resident confidentiality, have good written and oral communication skills, have filing and computer experience, be mature and motivated.

Training:  Attend Volunteer Orientation. Specific training will be provided by the unit clerk/care manager. Other training and in-services will be available.

Minimum commitment: One shift per week.

Days and times: Monday - Friday, 8am - 12pm

Visitor Summary: Provide friendly and individual attention to a resident. Share an interest, play cards, read, go for a walk, reminisce about the old days. This position offers the opportunity to form a close relationship with a senior or disabled younger adult.
