Darla Joinson
Darla Joinson is a committed healthcare leader whose 30-year career with CapitalCare has been marked by a strong dedication to evidence‑informed practice, person‑centered care, and staff development. Darla began her career with CapitalCare while she attended nursing school at the University of Alberta working as a health care aide and auxiliary care worker. She spent a few years as a staff nurse and realized her passion was with the elderly. From educator to Best Practice Leader, her role in guiding practice excellence and quality improvement was highlighted and led to involvement with many projects such as the Strategic Clinical Network for the Appropriate Use of Antipsychotics.
Darla took on the role of Site Director at CapitalCare Strathcona in 2022, bringing extensive experience in practice leadership, staff engagement, and care quality to the overall operational stewardship of the Strathcona site. She leads multidisciplinary teams, supports strategic initiatives, and oversees the delivery of high‑quality resident care in alignment with CapitalCare’s mission and vision.
Darla has navigated complex challenges and supported staff in managing evolving care standards, enhancing resident quality of life, and strengthening communication with families. Her approach emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and a deep respect for the residents and families served by CapitalCare Strathcona.
Darla was born in Saskatchewan and moved to Alberta with her family as a young girl. She graduated in 1996 from the U of A with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
